Hume’s Determinism Refuted by David R. Schneider Abstract: Hume’s argument for assuming cause-and-effect is undermined by way of three empirical challenges. Further, the argument itself is shown to contain two critical flaws in logic. A new theory is presented to supercede determinism, in which causality and chance are relative. In his debate with Bramhall, Hobbes claimed that his determinism could derive support from mainstream Calvinist theology. This claim is often taken at face value. But an examination of writers from Martin Luther to William Perkins reveals that mainstream Calvinism was not determinist. As Bramhall was able to show, Hobbes’s interpretation of these writers was characterized by crude Author: Alan Cromartie.

The Calvinistic Doctrine of Predestination Examined and Refuted, by Francis Hodgson () is one of the best books I have ever read refuting Calvinism. His arguments appeal to sound logic and he quotes extensively from well-known Calvinists of his day making sure the reader knows what he is arguing against.5/5(1). KARL POPPER'S ATTEMPTED REFUTATION OF "SCIENTIFIC" DETERMINISM. This essay is a critique of the book THE OPEN UNIVERSE: AN ARGUMENT FOR INDETERMINISM, by Karl Popper. In this book Popper attempts to refute what he calls "'Scientific' Determinism". Quantum Physics plays little role in his argument. If determinism is true, then it is an illusion that I ever genuinely deliberate about anything or that anything is ever really up to me. If these data are true, then determinism is false. Taylor argues that it doesn’t make any difference whether we are talking about a forthright, “hard” determinism, like that of .

If free will is an illusion and everything is predetermined, then the ultimate cause of why a person believes that free will is an illusion and everything is predetermined is that they were predetermined to do so.

For sure, this is a common way to be a determinism. In his book The Refutation of Determinism, Michael Ayers (London: Methuen, ) calls this sort of determinism actualism. Actualism, as applied to human and natural powers (e.g.

the powers of objects) yields the denial that objects (or humans) have unactualized powers. This book presents a confused and half-hearted attempt to refute determinism. The author broaches many topics which relate to determinism but the structure of his argument is so unclear that the ambitious title of this book seems s: 1.

Essentially it is a negative rebuttal of a retortive kind, such as Aristotle uses against the sceptic in the Metaphysics. But its treatment by these three writers indicates a metaphysical insight that could possibly furnish a positive refutation of any kind of radical determinism Cited by: 1.
